Bernard John Vyvjala, born on June 5, 1933, son of August Vyvjala and Anna Stazie Vyvjala (Tupa), husband of Opal Jones Vyvjala, peacefully entered eternal rest in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 10, 2013. Bernard loved his Lord and his church, St. Cyril of Alexandria Catholic Church in Houston, Texas. Bernard leaves behind four step-children, eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He loved all of his family, and his grandchildren held a special place in his heart. Bernard also loved the Dallas Cowboys (spending game-days in his Cowboys jersey), senior softball and bowling, playing cards and dominoes, and dancing the polka. Although he moved to Houston, Bernard remained loyal to his hometown of Flatonia. Bernard was a veteran of the Korean War, proud of his service to our country. After graduating from college in Denton, Bernard worked for many years for District IV in the Houston School System. In his later years, he enjoyed simple pleasures with Opal, such as gazing at the moon and stars. Bernard will be missed, but his family takes consolation that he is in a far better place. Funeral Mass is under the direction of Smith Funeral Home in Flatonia, Texas and will be held at 12:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flatonia, Texas with Father Eddie Winkler officiating. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Flatonia, Texas. No services will take place at Smith Funeral Home.
