John J. Merecka, 92, of Flatonia passed away July 29, 2013. He was born July 6, 1921 to the late Charles J. and Frances Khrovjak Merecka. Growing up as a son to a blacksmith, he lived in various communities around the Schulenburg and Flatonia areas. John served in the Army during World War II as a radio man. He returned to Flatonia where he then married Olga Barta on December 14, 1941. They enjoyed going to dances in the communities of Corn Cob Hill, Cotton Grove and Praha. John had a career in construction and farming while raising 3 children. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching Big Joe's Polka Party on television, attending the Praha Festival as well as sitting on the back porch with Olga in the evenings. John was blessed with 67 years of marriage before his wife's death. He was an active member of the American Legion for 69 years and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. John is survived by his children John W. Merecka of Houston, Ronald D. Merecka of Houston and Madeline J. Castille of Bastrop. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. Visitation will begin at 4:00 pm Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Flatonia. Rosary will be held at 9:30 am Friday, August 2, 2013 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Praha with Funeral Services to follow at 10:00 am, with Father Gabriel Maison officiating.
