Rachael Caballero

February 5, 1941 — January 17, 2018

Rachael Sanchez Caballero passed away on January 17, 2018 after a long illness. Her life began when she was born to Jerome (Geronimo) and Celia Ortega Sanchez of Yoakum on February 5, 1941. She went on to graduate from Yoakum High School and received a scholarship from her church for half of her tuition and she did office work and tuned instruments while attending Howard Payne University. She earned a Bachelor's of Science in Education in 1963. She completed her student teaching in Houston. Later she had a brief stint teaching first grade in Woodsboro, Texas. She moved back to her roots and later met her husband. She worked at Tex Tan in Yoakum, Texas. Soon, she arrived in Moulton, Texas where she finished her 33 year teaching career. She is preceded in death by her husband Guadalupe Thomas Caballero, Her parents Jerome (Geronimo) and Celia Ortega Sanchez, Grandfather Higinio Ortega, Grandmother Lucia Ortega, Her Uncle Abel Ortega, Sister Eloise (Lou) Sanchez Basquez, Brothers David Sanchez and Ernest Sanchez. Her surviving family members include sons Michael Anthony Caballero Sr. and spouse Melinda Caballero of Waelder, Texas, Thomas Ray Caballero of Austin, and Eric Jerome Caballero of Waelder, Texas. Sisters Irene Sanchez Coldewey and spouse Charles Coldewey of Hallettsville, Texas and Mary Helen Sanchez Molina and spouse Frank Sanchez of Yoakum, Texas, Brothers Raymond Sanchez and Carlos Sanchez of Yoakum, Texas, Joe Daniel Sanchez of Houston, Texas, Five grandchildren Michael Anthony Caballero, Jr. of Moulton, Texas, Jordan Noel Caballero Kuehn and Spouse Johnny Kuehn of Schulenburg, Texas, Layne Michael Harvard Caballero of Moulton, Texas, Zachary Thomas Velasquez and Cheyanne Rose Caballero of Waelder Texas. and two Great Grandchildren Jillian and Jolee Kuehn. Her teaching career spanned over three decades where she had the opportunity to teach three generations of students. Most were from the same family including her own. She was an active member in Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA) and went on to coach several successful students in UIL Spelling and Ready Writing along with the Knowledge Bowl. She participated in all pep rallies, carnivals, banquets, and holiday parties for her students. Not only was she a wife, daughter, a sister, a mother, a teacher, a colleague, a mentor, but also a friend. She will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for the purchase of a memorial bench to honor Mrs. Caballero.
