Robert J. Landry, known as Bobby to his loving wife, Bear to his college friends, Coach to his athletes, Dad, Dr. to his colleagues, and Pawpaw, of Cistern, TX in Fayette County, passed away at the age of 74 on Friday, November 12th, 2021. Born on January 18, 1947 in Port Arthur, he was the son of Wilson and Margie Landry. He graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School in 1964 and continued on to receive his Bachelor's Degree from Stephen F. Austin State University on a full-ride football scholarship. He obtained his Master's Degree in Education from Lamar University and his Doctor of Education in Educational Psychology in 1990 from the University of Houston. He is survived by his wife, Janis Landry, of 54 years; four children- Neely Kim and husband Mike of League City, son Brad Landry of Cistern, daughter Jodie Landry of Cistern, and son Colin Landry and wife Tiana of Cistern; seven grandchildren- Elizabeth Weido, Mason Kim, Slater Kim, Dylan Hughes, Delanie Hughes, Josie Landry and Evie Landry; great-grandson Kaleb Wagens; and 2 brothers- Larry Landry and Jeff Landry. His love for the game of football started his career in Education in 1971 coaching at several different school districts before his move to Pasadena ISD, where he coached football from 1976-1979 at Sam Rayburn High School. He left Rayburn to coach football at Stephen F. Austin State University for 2 years 1980-1981, but returned back to PISD the following year to coach football and teach science at Sam Rayburn from 1982-1986. In 1987, he became a counselor at the district's Guidance Center. He also worked at the PISD Administration Building in the Student Services Department before becoming the Director of Research and Evaluation in 1999, serving in that position until his retirement from PISD in 2004. In 2012, he and his wife moved to Cistern, TX where he enjoyed working on the ranch. During his career, he also served as adjunct professor for several colleges including the University of Houston, University of Oklahoma and Alamo College. Robert was also the sole proprietor of Research and Educational Services (REdS), established in 1990, providing training, consultation and evaluation services to numerous non-profit programs, state agencies, private entities, schools, community coalitions and state coalitions. His passion in the field led to outstanding accomplishments including numerous awards, honors, recognitions and commendations for his work in education, prevention, research and curriculum development. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 16th at 4:00pm with rosary following at 5:00pm at Smith Funeral Home in Flatonia, TX. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, November 17th at 1:00pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flatonia. Burial will be immediately following the service at Saints Cyril and Methodius Parish Catholic Church Cemetery in Cistern, TX with reception to follow.
