Thomas Bridges

December 30, 1927 — October 18, 2012

Thomas Harry Bridges of Muldoon went to eternal rest with our Lord on October 18, 2012 after losing a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Tom is survived by his children Patricia Wright, Rebecca Gary, Jacquelyn Hutton and Timothy Bridges, sister, Bernice Leonard, and brother, Richard Bridges, as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Tom was predeceased by his wife of almost 45 years, Alleen Miller Bridges, and his second wife of seven years, Kitty Bridges, mother, Bernice Barnett, and father, Horace Bridges. Tom was a complex man who personified the expression "Still waters run deep." He wasn't loud or bombastic but he was a man who deeply loved his family and celebrated their triumphs and mourned their setbacks as though they were his own. His loyalty and integrity touched everyone around him, and anyone who met or had any dealings with him came away a little bit richer. Tom was a patriotic man who served his country in the Merchant Marines at the close of World War II aboard freighter and oil tankers plying coastal waters. Near the end of WWII, Tom joined the US Navy and served in the South Pacific on numerous islands including Kwajalein Island guarding Japanese prisoners of war. Tom confided to his brother that many of the sailors used pejoratives toward the prisoners, but he saw them as "в?¦soldiers and sailors like us..." and they responded with small gifts and kindness to him. After his Navy enlistment, Tom trained as an agent-telegrapher and was hired by the Southern Pacific Railroad and wound up in Muldoon in 1949 where he met his bride to be, Alleen Miller. They were married in 1952 and lived in Muldoon until 1959 when the family moved to Pasadena, Texas where Tom took a position with Rohm and Haas Chemical Company. Tom and Alleen raised their family to adulthood and saw their children become good productive citizens who mirror their parents, and they in turn chose good mates with good values. Mankind is poorer as we bid farewell to Tom. He touched many, many lives in his 84 years enriching their lives with his quiet kindness, examples of integrity, honesty, sympathy and love. He will be sorely missed by everyone who ever came into contact with him. Visitation will be held Monday, October 22, 2012 from 4pm to 9pm at Smith Funeral Home, Flatonia with family receiving friends from 4pm to 6pm.
